This Month's SuperSlow®
Star:
Maria Ryke
This
months SuperSlow® Star is Maria
Ryke
Maria found us through Jan Scott one of
our long term clients and the
SuperSlow Star of September 2004.
Maria has worked at Alamo Toyota for over
20 years and she has
been an ardent supporter of Inside Outside. She has
referred her daughter Nellie, her boss Don Haynes wife
Brenda and the owner of
Alamo Toyota John Toomey and his wife Becky! The tribe has named her "Brook that
Ripples" in honor of her spreading the word about Inside
Outside.

In
Maria's own words:
"Finding
Dr. Christian’s Inside Outside Super Slow program was an
answer to my prayer.
For the past 12 years, I have been totally
inactive. Zero exercise!
I sit at a desk all day, everyday, and the
lack of exercise took its toll on my life and my body. I developed neck, lower back problems, a meniscus tear in my
left knee, foot and ankle problems, poor sleep, low energy.
I was visiting the chiropractor once a week. I joined a
gym, twice, at the advice of my chiropractor who told me I
desperately needed to start some strength training
exercises. I was caught in a vicious cycle, I needed to
exercise, but I could not find the right place or the right
program. I tried the gym, yoga, Pilates, water aerobics;
nothing seemed to work for me. In February 2007 during a
retreat, I Shared my dilemma with Jan Scott, a current
Inside Outside member, whom by the way is in great shape.
She shared her secret with me. I was very skeptical of the
program when she mentioned weight training, (since I have
never attempted to work with weights) and that it only took
20-25 minutes twice a week at first then once a week
thereafter. I will be eternally grateful to Jan for sharing
her secret.
The SuperSlow and the Zone Program are
amazing. Dr. Christian and his staff have been extremely
helpful and supportive in helping me realize that I am
stronger than I think I am. Their knowledge and expertise
have made all the difference in making this program work for
me. The results have been amazing, I am starting to see
muscles I didn’t even know I had. I can actually feel I am
getting stronger every day. I feel better, I sleep better,
I have more energy. Most of my days are now pain free!! I
look forward to working out. The results of the
Inside Outside program keep me motivated. After each
session, I feel great. I intend to make the Super Slow/Zone
program a permanent part of my life.”
Here
are some graphs which demonstrate her remarkable progress in
body composition and gaining strength!

Maria has gained about 4 lbs of muscle
and lost 4 lbs of fat and her body fat% has dropped to
31%.

Maria has increased her strength
considerably especially in the row machine.
Maria, we are proud of you!!
Congratulations on being selected our SuperSlow®
Star of the Month and earning 4 more SuperSlow®
Sessions!

Basics: Vitamins Part
6
The B Vitamins, Vitamin B5 Pantothenic Acid.
We are continuing a series talking about those nutrients
which are Essential to Life. A “Back to the Basics Series”.
Basic questions we need to answer are: Why is this molecule
or element Essential, What Purpose does it Serve, In What
Form is it Best Consumed and How Much do we need.
Vitamins A
vitamin is an
organic molecule required by a living
organism in minute amounts for proper
health. An organism deprived of all sources of a
particular vitamin will eventually suffer from
disease
symptoms specific to that vitamin.
Vitamins
can be classified as either
water soluble, which means they dissolve
easily in water, or
fat soluble, which means they are
absorbed through the
intestinal tract with the help of
lipids.
In general, an organism must obtain vitamins
or their metabolic precursors from outside
the body, most often from the organism's
diet. Examples of vitamins that the
human body can derive from precursors
include vitamin A, which can be produced
from
beta carotene; niacin from the
amino acid
tryptophan; and vitamin D through
exposure of
skin to
ultraviolet
light.
The term vitamin
does not encompass other
essential nutrients such as
dietary minerals,
essential fatty acids, or
essential amino acids, nor is it used
for the large number of other nutrients that
merely promote health, but are not strictly
essential.

B5
Pantothenic Acid
Function
Pantothenic acid, also known
as vitamin B5,
is essential to all forms of
life . Pantothenic acid is
found throughout living
cells in the form of
coenzyme A (CoA), a vital
coenzyme in numerous
chemical reactions .
Naturally occurring pantothenic acid deficiency in humans is very rare and has been observed only in cases of severe malnutrition. World War II prisoners in the Phillipines, Burma, and Japan experienced numbness and painful burning and tingling in their feet, which was relieved specifically by pantothenic acid

Supplements and Drugs
Presently there is little
evidence that older adults differ in their
intake or requirement for pantothenic acid.
Most multivitamin/multimineral supplements
provide at least 5 mg/day of pantothenic
acid.
Pantothenic Acid also
helps with Hydration of the skin and is
found in these 2 very popular Skinceutical
products.

"For years the medical establishment has been telling
Americans that fighting heart disease means a war against
cholesterol. Slowly but surely, like the powerful Wizard of
Oz façade, the cholesterol story has been slowly eroding.
Now the scientific data is shifting more to inflammation as
the underlying cause of heart disease. Of course, this makes
common sense since the number-one drug to prevent a heart
attack is an aspirin. Although aspirin has no effect on
cholesterol levels, it has a dramatic effect on reducing
inflammation. Recent articles in the New England Journal of
Medicine have again confirmed the importance of inflammation
on heart disease. A crude indictor of inflammation,
C-reactive protein, appears to be more powerful than bad
cholesterol levels in predicting future heart attacks.
But what if there was an even more powerful predictor of
inflammation that could predict heart attacks? As I describe
in my newest book, “The Anti-Inflammation Zone,” such a
blood marker exists. It is the ratio of arachidonic acid
(AA) to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). This marker of
inflammation precedes C-reactive protein by years. You could
take drugs, such as statins, on a lifetime basis to reduce
C-reactive protein. Of course, there are some side
effects, such as memory loss, muscle weakness, neuropathy,
and liver damage. But statins don’t reduce the AA/EPA ratio
– they actually increase it. On the other hand, taking
high-dose fish oil reduces the AA/EPA ratio, and the only
known side-effect is to make you smarter. The amount of fish
oil you need to reduce inflammation depends on how well you
control insulin in your diet. The more you control insulin
by following the Zone Diet, the less fish oil you need. On
the other hand, the less you control insulin, the more fish
oil you need. The choice is yours. Whatever approach (drugs
or diet) you choose, just keep in mind that controlling
inflammation is a much wiser medical approach to reducing
heart attacks than controlling cholesterol."
Let us know if you want the
AA/EPA test. The Cost is $300 and includes a consult
with Dr. Christian to discuss the results. We also
talk about the AA/EPA test in detail in our Omega Zone
Seminar.
